39th Annual Storytelling Festival April 24 at C.W. Post

Whether you like to hear a good story or tell one, the Palmer School of Library and Information Science has a program that will mesmerize and entertain people of all ages so that they can enhance their storytelling techniques. The 39th Annual Storytelling Festival will take place at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville on Saturday, April 24, 2004 and will teach participants the essential techniques that make good storytelling a master art. This program is geared toward educators, librarians and anyone who enjoys fables and folklore. Featured speakers include:

Loreena Doherty: a talented storyteller who will tell "Celtic Threads" and will entertain participants with a magical web of folklore and story. Laugh, cry and wonder when you hear tales of selkies, fairies and wild Celtic women.

Janice Buckner: Janice's "There Are Many Ways to Tell a Story" highlights six creative approaches to storytelling: Song, Puppetry, Poetry, Sign Language, Movement and Mime. The show excites the listeners to be their own storytellers and provides them with the tools! Janice is one of the most heavily booked children's concert artists, performing over 200 shows each year.  She has toured nationally and internationally since 1977, appearing on television and radio, as well as in over 4,000 schools and concert halls. She is noted for her exceptional voice, her musical creativity and the outstanding quality of her lyrics. Janice is a prolific songwriter, her songs appearing on her nationally acclaimed Learn Along SongŪ Series, as well as on CDs and cassettes of other performing artists.

Jim Hawkins: for over 1,000 years, the storytelling tradition ("Seanchas") has been a focal point in Irish life. Jim combines stories and songs onto to a variety of themes in Irish history, culture and tradition. Many are humorous pieces while others are of a serious nature.

Barbara Hoffman and Rita Auerbach: this duo will perform stories in tandem with guitar, drum and lots of enthusiasm. They will be performing Kagan and the Wind by Gordon Bok, WorryCare, Hole in the Bucket, DoodleDoo and Soo-boy, the Yiddish song/story called The Overcoat, and Pete Seeger's The Foolish Frog. Barbara is a public librarian, adjunct professor, editor, reviewer for a national magazine and a contributing writer, public relations professional, storyteller, dancer, author, folksinger, songwriter and musician.  She has appeared on radio, television and concert stages.
