Nassau County Legislator Yatauro Speaks at C.W. Post

Democrat Diane Yatauro, a legislator for Nassau County’s 18th Legislative District, shared her experiences as a community advocate with public relations majors at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University on March 24, 2004.

Yatauro, a political newcomer who began serving as a legislator on January 1, 2004, addressed an undergraduate Community Relations class, which focuses on community affairs, government, media relations and public relations.

She spoke about her vision for the future prosperity of her district, which encompasses areas such as Glen Cove, Brookville, Sea Cliff, Locust Valley, Greenvale and Bayville. Legislator Yatauro spoke about her efforts to address transportation issues, taxes and local commerce. She talked about the importance of exchanging information with citizens through her "listening tours," where she meets with local residents to seek their thoughts on community needs. Among the issues discussed were traffic congestion along Northern Boulevard in Greenvale and Yatauro’s vision of how to solve the problem. Addressing student concerns about transportation, Yatauro explained how she is also working to improve bus and train service in Nassau County. She also addressed the issues of county finances and the importance of balancing Nassau County’s budget. As an extension of her listening tours, Yatauro’s appearance allowed students to voice their concerns while gaining insight into the workings of county government.

According to Adam D’Antonio of Locust Valley, a C.W. Post student who attended the presentation, "Some people view politicians as inaccessible and see the legislative process as confusing. Legislator Yatauro really took the time to speak with us as people, not as voters. She helped clarify issues of importance and made us feel our opinions and concerns are valued."
