Censorship Experts Discuss
Library Freedoms at C.W. Post
Thursday, September 30 2 to 5 p.m.
Brookville, N.Y. The past president of a nationwide library
association and the school librarian at the heart of a landmark
Supreme Court censorship case will discuss library freedoms and
censorship on Thursday, September 30 at the C.W. Post Campus of
Long Island University in Brookville.
"You Cant Say That!!! Censorship and the Media"
will feature keynote speaker Nancy Kranich, former president of
the American Library Association and former associate dean of libraries
at New York University. Among the topics she will discuss:
- The FCCs new indecency enforcement regulations;
- Provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act;
- The banning of Dixie Chicks music by some Clear Channel radio
stations.
These developments diminish libraries ability to provide
a wide range of views and information, she contends. Without the
production of diverse, uncensored media resources, libraries cannot
fulfill their mission by acquiring materials that present all points
of view on current and historical issues.
Also speaking will be Donald Wilson, school librarian at Island
Trees Union Free School District in Nassau County during the 1982
Supreme Court ruling that limited a school boards power to
ban books from school libraries. Wilson is currently the director
of the School Library Media Program at the Palmer School of Library
and Information Science at C.W. Post.
The seminar will run from 2 to 5 p.m. at Top of the Commons in
Hillwood Commons at the C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Boulevard,
Brookville, N.Y.
"You Cant Say That!!! Censorship and the Media"
is sponsored by the Palmer School of Library and Information Science
at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, The Nassau County
Library Association Media Services Division, The Intellectual Freedom
Committee, the Long Island School Media Association (LISMA), and
Suffolk School Library Media Association (SSLMA).
