March 29, 2002 -- Library Science isn't just for librarians any
more. Today, with a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science
(MSLIS) you can not only become a public librarian, you can become
certified by New York State as a school media specialist, join a
host of companies and organizations as an archivist, or become a
records manager, information architect, or knowledge manager in
government, private business or industry settings.
Now, for the first time, Suffolk County residents can pursue these
careers with very little travel. In Fall 2002, the Brentwood Campus
of Long Island University will begin offering most of the Palmer
School of Library and Information Science's MSLIS Program right
in the heart of Suffolk County. Students are only required to take
2 classes at the C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, Nassau County.
Courses in the MSLIS program range from Introduction to Library
and Information Science to Management of Libraries and Information
Centers, Integrating Technologies in the School Media Center and
Children's Sources and Services. Classes are offered at convenient
evening and weekend hours, mindful of the working adult.
In addition, individuals who have already earned a master's degree
in library science may become eligible for NYS certification as
a School Media Specialist by taking classes at the Brentwood Campus.
"The range of courses offered at the Brentwood Campus of Long
Island University will greatly enhance the educational opportunities
for residents of Suffolk County," said Jerry Nichols, Director
of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. "The Palmer School
has long been known for the success of its library school graduates
and Long Island continues to offer excellent job opportunities in
school and public libraries for enthusiastic, well-educated professionals."
The Palmer School of Library and Information Science is part of
the College of Information and Computer Science at the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University. The Master of Science in Library
and Information Science is accredited by the American Library Association.
The Brentwood Campus of Long Island University has been offering
undergraduate, graduate and non-credit programs to residents of
central Suffolk County since 1959. Serving a total enrollment of
more than 900 students, the Brentwood Campus offers the intimate
feel of a small college but has access to all of the advantages
and resources of the 8th largest private university in the U.S.
The Brentwood Campus is located at 100 Second Avenue in Brentwood,
on property owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
The Brentwood Campus of Long Island University will host an Open
House on Thursday, June 27, 2002, from 2-6 p.m. Fall courses begin
on September 3. For additional information about the Palmer School
