Letter from the Director

Dear Friends,

The subject of giftedness among school-age children continues to be of great interest to the educational community. This website is designed to increase awareness of the program for gifted children offered by the Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth.

Data on gifted children indicate that their giftedness should be nurtured if it is to become the basis of a productive, responsible and happy adult life. The nurturing process requires challenging learning situations, intellectual exchanges with well-informed adults, and the companionship of other children with similar capacities, interests and communication skills. All of these experiences must be provided in an environment supportive of the child's natural gifts. The Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth is designed to provide each child with a sense of intellectual worth, offering experiences that foster an appreciation of the mind - one of life's greatest pleasures.

The Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth starts its 25th year in September. The Saturday program is for gifted children from kindergarten through grade 6; the summer program is for grades 2-8. This year we are offering more than 40 courses, including those in the natural, social and computer sciences, humanities and mathematics.

Sincerely,

Dr. Madelon Solowey
