M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
(TESOL) (36-42 credits)
PROGRAM GOALS
To train English as a Second Language teachers who can
demonstrate competence as teachers of children who are linguistically and
culturally different and specifically:
- 1. To provide a program of specialization in TESOL which
has taken into account the special needs of the multilingual/multicultural
suburban school district;
- 2. To provide courses that will be required for New York
State Certification;
- 3. To provide advanced training for experienced teachers
of TESOL and for supervisors and administrators who wish further comprehension
of the programs they supervise;
- 4. To provide opportunities for field experienced teachers
who wish to upgrade their skills in TESOL and for those students who have
not had practical teaching experience.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Students will be expected to meet general admission requirements of the
School of Education as stated in the Graduate Bulletin. In addition students
will be expected:
To demonstrate native-like oral and written proficiency
in English through written and oral examination administered as part of
the NYSTCE;
Have knowledge of a foreign language and/or culture equivalent
to that of a one-year college program.

Comprehensive Examination |
All students completing the Master's in Teaching English
to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are required to demonstrate proficiency
in English. Evidence of proficiency will be recognized by successful completion
of the Language Proficiency Assessment in English (ELPA-C). This test is
part of the NYSTCE.
SUMMER INSTITUTES AND WORKSHOPS (top)
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction has, since
1970, offered institutes and workshops during the summer and throughout
the academic year. They are especially designed to assist in-service classroom
teachers and working professionals in the field. The specialized offerings
are developed to assist enrolled graduate students in understanding new
trends, strategies, and developments in the field of teaching.
These institutes and workshops change each year. Some of
the programs offered in the past have included

- 2. Teaching and Learning in a Diverse World
- 3. Young Children with Special Needs (Birth to Six)
- 4. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
