Each applicant's credentials are carefully reviewed by an admissions committee. An applicant's eligibility for admission is based on evidence of intellectual aptitude, personal maturity, and commitment to psychology in the public interest.
The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program is committed to maintaining its quality of education by limiting the number of students, accepting between 18-20 candidates into each class. Approximately 17% of applicants are invited to attend. The program completion rate is 90%. Approximately seventy five percent of the students are women, and students range in age from early twenties to early fifties.
Application Instructions for Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (Psy.D.)
- Application Form
Complete the Application for Graduate Admissions.
- Application Fee
Attach the $30 application fee to the application form. All applications for admission must be accompanied by a check or money order made payable to Long Island University. This fee is non-refundable.
- Personal Statement
Refer to the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology Personal Statement instructions form (below).
- Requirements for Admission
- A minimum of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a strong undergraduate GPA.
- A minimum of 18 credit hours of psychology, including courses in Statistics, Research Design or methods, Personality and Abnormal Psychology.
- Competitive GRE scores in each of the aptitude subtests and the Advanced Psychology test.
- Transcripts
All applicants must forward one official copy of their undergraduate (and graduate, if applicable) transcripts to the Graduate Admissions Office; these transcripts must be sent directly from your school(s) to Long Island University– student copies are not acceptable. - Letters of Recommendation
Applicants for the Doctoral Program are required to provide three separate recommendations. Provide each recommender with a Recommendation form. Applicants should complete to upper portion of the form. Be sure to provide the recommenders with the address for Graduate Admissions (above). Recommendations should be from an academic source, preferably a professor or academic official who is familiar with your academic history and achievement. Recommendations may also be from an individual(s) who has observed your performance in a clinical setting. (Click Here for form and/or link to Admissions page with form).
- Graduate Admissions Test
Applicants must submit official copies of their scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Advanced Psychology tests. Scores should be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office. C.W. Post’s Educational Testing Service (ETS) Service Code is 2070. Applications without all test scores submitted will not be considered under any circumstances.

Applicants should submit a C.V. with their applications.
- Application Deadline
Completed applications must be post-marked by January 31. Late applications will not be considered under any circumstances.
Approximately one third of the applicants meeting the criteria for consideration will be invited to an interview. The interview is an important part of the evaluation of the applicant. The interview consists of two individual meetings with faculty. A tour of the facilities and an opportunity to meet with current doctoral candidates are also arranged.
Interviews will be conducted in February 2008. All applicants will receive an admissions decision by the end of February or the first week in March.

PERSONAL STATEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Your personal statement should address each of the following:
- Your goals in applying to the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology.
- The scope and nature of prior clinical or research experiences.
- In addition to general training in the practice of clinical psychology,
the C.W. Post doctoral program emphasizes training with underserved populations.
Please describe your interest level in the program's current specialty
concentration areas: Developmental Disabilities, Family Violence, and
Serious and Persistent Mental Illness. This statement is an initial
preference, not a commitment. Students do not make a formal commitment
to one of the areas until the Fall of the second year in the program.
- List three professors (in order of preference) with whom you would
like to work during your time as a graduate student. This list is also
a preference, not a commitment. While you may initially be paired with
the professor of your choice as a research assistant, students and professors
may choose to alter these initial arrangements if interests change over
time.
Your personal statement should be typed, double-spaced, on separate paper. Be
sure to include your full name and page numbers in the upper-right-hand corner
of each sheet.
