Graduate Program

M.A. Program in History

The Master of Arts in History at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is designed to provide broad and intensive instruction in history, research, and writing in a general field of study. The M.A. degree provides preparation for a variety of careers as well as fulfilling requirements for secondary school teachers of history. A Masters in History also prepares students for careers in public history. Courses are given in the evening offering students the opportunity to complete their studies while remaining employed. Each student will be assigned a Graduate Advisor who will assist in mapping out a course of study to match the student’s interests and needs. Requirements for the master's degree are intended to be completed between two and four years.

Admissions

Prospective students should consult with Professor Gronim about admissions criteria.

Course of Study

The MA in History entails earning 30 credits of graduate coursework. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and receive no grade below a B to remain in good standing. All students are required to take HIS 601: Historiography. Other coursework is selected in consultation with the Graduate Advisor. Students are expected to take a minimum of 6 credits in US history and 6 credits of non-US history.

Students who are matriculated in the M.A. in History program may choose among three options for completing their degree:

  1. Thesis – thirty-credit program (30) that includes Historiography (HIS 601) and a 6-credit thesis (HIS 707 and 708).
  2. Comprehensive Exam – thirty-credit (30) that includes Historiography (HIS 601) and two comprehensive exams.
  3. Public History Project – thirty-credit program (30) that includes Historiography (HIS 601) and a 3-credit public history project (HIS 705).

Students who are pursuing an M.S. in Adolescence Education/Social Studies or Middle Childhood Education/Social Studies may also take graduate History courses as part of earning their respective degrees. They, too, should consult with the Graduate Advisor when selecting their courses. If pursuing the 45-credit M.S., HIS 601 is a required course.
