Course Requirements

The Department of Economics offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. To be eligible for that degree, students must take, in addition to the core requirements:(anchor to below) MTH 5 and 6 or 7 and 8, ECO 11 and 12, 54 (or 454), 61, 62, 72 and at least four additional advanced electives in Economics, for a total of 30 credits in Economics. At least one of the electives must be from the following courses: ECO 21, 41, 42, 43, 55, 73 and 75.

Students who minor in Economics must take 21 credits, including Introduction to Economics (ECO 11 and 12), Money and Banking (ECO 21), Microeconomic Analysis (ECO 61) or Macroeconomic Analysis (ECO 62), and Statistics (ECO 72). Six additional credits must be selected from Economics courses at the intermediate or advanced level.

Although no other courses are required, students are encouraged to develop, with the help of their academic counselors, concentrations in related areas of interest. These areas may be in mathematics, business, or the other social sciences, but are not confined to them.

The core requirements for freshmen consist of the following: 6 credits in the Language/Literature area, 9 credits in the History/Philosophy area, 6 credits in Social Science, 8 credits in a Laboratory Science, 6 credits in Fine Arts, and completion of basic competency requirements.

Choice of courses and the sequence followed are not specified and depend on the student's total program.

Education majors (students seeking provisional certification as social studies teachers in secondary schools with a concentration in Economics; see the School of Education section of the undergraduate bulletin) must take college core requirements, the Economics and Mathematics courses required of all Economics students, and, in addition, the following courses:
