C.W. Post Campus Department of Economics

Welcome to the Economics Department

Economics is a powerful and versatile discipline that studies the intersections of business, government, and society. Economists grapple with some of the toughest and most pressing questions facing us as the twenty-first century begins:

  • How do we measure the costs and benefits of globalization?
  • As cultures across the world become more integrated, how do we compare the standard of living in countries as diverse as India, Brazil, and the United States, and how can we improve it world-wide?
  • How can we design environmental policies that are both realistic and sustainable?
What is the relationship between the political environment of a country, its financial markets, and its "real" economy?
  • Can widespread abject poverty be eliminated in developing countries?

An economics major can prepare you for a career in a diverse array of disciplines. Economics majors can become:

  • Lawyers with a background knowledge of how laws and regulations affect firm behavior
  • Industry and financial analysts with a unique expertise on policy matters
  • Policy analysts working for governments and non-governmental organizations
  • Aid workers helping poor countries improve their economies
  • Diplomats specializing in the relationship between industry and government

...and many more things. See our Careers in Economics page for a list of job opportunities available to economics majors, and the programs and requirements page for a description of the economics program.
