The Butterfly Bush (Buddleia ssp.)

This butterfly bush, located on the north side of Hillwood Commons, is busy earning its name while it supplies nectar to a visiting tiger swallow tail butterfly. As the name suggests, the main attribute of this shrub is that it attracts all kinds of insects, even humming birds, to its ornamental flowers which are rich in nectar. C.W. Post has several Buddleia species on campus in different colors and it is a visual delight to see several butterfly species visiting these shrubs. Any one interested in aiding our beleaguered butterflies should add a few of these shrubs to their garden and they will be rewarded by the extra dimension that the color and movement of these creatures add to the garden experience.
