S.C.A.L.E. Program

Becoming a S.C.A.L.E. School.....

         Offering a S.C.A.L.E. Course ....

1. High school submits to the S.C.A.L.E./A.C.E. Office the prospective teacher’s resume, graduate and undergraduate transcripts, and proposed syllabus. Usually the academic departments require minimally a Master’s degree in the discipline.
2. Once the academic department approves teacher and course syllabus, we send the school an agreement which requires approval from the district and school leadership, student applications and student registration forms, and a school information form. Parent or guardian’s signature is necessary on both the application and the registration form. We will run a course with a minimum of 15 students taking the course for college credit in one high school class. We reserve the right to cancel classes with smaller enrollment (e.g. 15 students in multiple periods or fewer than 15 students registering to take the course for college credit through the S.C.A.L.E. Program). The school information sheet requires the school bell schedule, room, time, and teacher for each S.C.A.L.E. class scheduled, school calendar, principal’s name and phone number, human resource director’s name and phone number, S.C.A.L.E. Coordinator’s name, title, phone, fax, and email. We must have an email address that the school’s S.C.A.L.E. coordinator checks daily.
3. The school returns the signed agreement to the S.C.A.L.E. Office, Administration Building, Suite 205, C.W. Post Campus, 720 Northern Boulevard, Brookville, NY, 11720-1300 and sends the certificate of insurance, as specified in the agreement, to the Insurance Manager of LIU, University Center, 700 Northern Boulevard, Brookville, NY 11548-1326.
4. The school returns the applications, registrations, and a current academic transcript for each prospective student to the S.C.A.L.E./A.C.E. Office by the due date – Oct 1 in the fall semester, Feb. 1 in the spring semester. Students who have never taken a course through LIU also submit a check in the amount of $30 made out to C.W. Post. This check is a non-refundable, one-time application fee. It is not applied to tuition.
5. The S.C.A.L.E. Office evaluates students’ transcripts. Students should have minimally an unweighted cumulative 80 average over their high school careers in English language arts, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and foreign language. Students who are accepted to the program receive an acceptance letter from the S.C.A.L.E. Director.
6. Accepted students are registered. These students will receive at home a tuition bill from the C.W. Post Bursar’s Office. Payment is expected when the student receives the bill. Tuition is $110 per credit, $330 for a three-credit course. Late payments may incur late fees. Nonpayments become bad debt.
7. Any student who decides after registration not to take the course for college credit must drop formally from the C.W. Post course by the Drop Dates - Nov. 15 for fall semester and full-year courses, April 15 for spring semester courses. To drop formally the school sends us a Request to Drop form by the Drop Date. The Request to Drop form requires signatures by the student, parent or guardian, and school agent.
8. Once students are registered, a professor from C.W. Post will contact the high school teacher of the course and arrange to make between six and eight visits to the teacher’s class. At least four of these visits will be full period lectures.
9. The S.C.A.L.E. Office sends rosters to the school a minimum of one week before the end of the course and the school returns the completed rosters registered mail or hand delivered by the due date, usually the first day of Regents week. Students will receive a written confirmation of the grade for the course from C.W. Post Registrar’s Office.
10. Official transcripts are available approximately two weeks after grades are submitted to Post. Students secure an official transcript by: (1) visiting the Registrar’s Office on the C.W. Post Campus, (2) accessing the Student Information System (SIS) on the web at it.liu.edu/sis/SISLogin.aspx, (3) calling the toll free number (1 800 646 1858). There is a nominal charge for an official transcript and a student will need his social security number. If using the web or the toll free number, the student will need a credit card.
11. Changing a grade is a formal process with paperwork. The school must submit a Change of Grade form completed with the teacher’s signature, explanation of the change, and the principal’s signature. The completed Change of Grade is reviewed by the Enrollment Services S.C.A.L.E. and A.C.E. Review Committee before any change is made. Grade changes for S.C.A.L.E. and A.C.E. grades are accepted until February 15 for fall semester courses and until July 1 for spring semester courses and for full year courses.
