C.W. Post Students Raise $2,000 to Fight World Hunger

Brookville, NY – C.W. Post Professor Dr. Scott Carlin and students in his undergraduate class “Conservation of Natural Environmental Resources” raised $1,700 to help fight world hunger. The money will be donated to Oxfam America, an international development and relief agency. The donation will be boosted by a $300 matching grant from food and facilities management company ARAMARK, which provides dining services to the C.W. Post Campus.
“We studied food and agriculture as part of our natural resources curriculum,” said Dr. Carlin, describing the impetus for the project. “We discussed world hunger, government policy debates and initiatives to deal with hunger, and the implications of hunger around the globe.”
The students were enthusiastic about making a difference by advocating for the cause. They sought donations from family and friends, and wrote reflective essays about the experience. Students often discovered too much skepticism and too little empathy and compassion among their peers. As student, Stephanie DeFranco wrote, “Asking people to care shouldn’t bring about fear, remorse, or hesitation.” But students were also deeply touched by unexpected acts of kindness, like the girl who handed Stephanie a twenty dollar bill without a second thought.
The donation to Oxfam America will support Oxfam’s program to help struggling people work toward self-sufficiency.
Oxfam America works with local partners to deliver development programs and emergency relief services, and it campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty. Oxfam America goes to the scene, helping people gain the hope, skills, and direction to create a new future. Oxfam is also active in the global arena, addressing social injustice through advocacy, public education, and emergency assistance programs.”
Dr. Carlin is an associate professor of geography in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, founding school on the C.W. Post Campus, offers dozens of undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its thirteen academic departments.
