Exhibits and Events

November - December 2009 :
Gender and Advertising
According to Erving Goffman (1976), advertisements portray the roles and attitudes of men and women in society. They define social expectations and promote stereotypes that men must be powerful and rich and that women must be beautiful. They use words, images, violence, fear, intimacy, and sex to play on people's desires and foster insecurities in consumers, having the most effect on women who are measured against a virtually unattainable ideal. This exhibit includes a variety of advertisements from the 1800s to the present to examine how men and women have been depicted over time and to see what messages are conveyed to the viewers, either overtly or in subtle ways. Some of these ads can be viewed by using the Goffman model of comparison:
1. Relative size: observed when one person in the frame is displayed as being larger or smaller than another person.
2. Feminine touch: in which a person is portrayed using his or her fingers or hand to gently caress or cradle an object.
3. Function ranking: in which a person is portrayed as playing a managerial role in relation to another person.
4. Ritualization of subordination: in which a person is portrayed in submissive posture relative to others in the frame.
5. Licensed withdrawal: in which a person is portrayed as being psychologically removed from his or her surroundings.
6. Family: which includes ads portraying family relationships.

Ungarelli, Dean of University Libraries, and colleagues for their support and participation in this exhibit, as well as talented artist Hyo Sik Kim for her design of the banner and graphic assistance.
November - December 2009 :
Google and Books
This exhibit displays articles, books, and webpages that examine the search engine giant's evolving relationship with books, publishers, and libraries. Included are looks at Creative Commons licenses and the Google Book Settlement Agreement, along with the legal and copyright issues involved in making out-of-print, copyrighted, and public domain material available online.
Fall 2009 :
C.W. Post Common Read: The Last Lecture
What makes you happy? How badly do you want it? What do you do in times of adversity? What defines your experiences? How do you perceive things? How do you show loyalty? How do you show gratitude? How do you define leadership? These are the questions asked on posters displayed throughout the library as part of the 2009 Common Read Program of The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Each question is accompanied by a quote by Pausch to serve a starting point for your own thoughts about life's basic questions.
Fall 2009 :
Christopher Columbus: An Ongoing Voyage
This exhibit, created by the Library of Congress from its collection of manuscripts, books, maps, and other artifacts, explores the encounters that changed the world in what came to be called America. It takes a look at the peoples of North and South America before their contact with Columbus and those who came after, followed by the European incursions, claims, and conquests that would continue throughout the sixteenth century and beyond.

Notable Italian-American Politicians
In celebration of National Italian American Heritage Month, this exhibit features profiles of past and present politicians such as Fiorello Henry LaGuardia, Vito Marcantonio, Geraldine Ferraro, Mario Cuomo, and Nancy Pelosi.
