Master of Science Degree
 

Goals
The Master of Science in Nutrition is a 36-credit course of study designed to enhance professional qualifications as a nutrition expert and prepare the student for leadership roles in the nutrition community.

The M.S. in Nutrition has four specialty concentrations:

  • Nutrition and Exercise Physiology
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Geriatric Nutrition
  • Eating Disorders

These areas complement a Core Curriculum that includes nutrition science, research methods, biomedical statistics, as well as communications, education, and counseling skills. A number of challenging electives enables students to pursue individual interests. A final research experience culminates the degree.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Master of Science in Nutrition must have completed the following courses at the undergraduate level: one (1) year of biology (to include Anatomy and Physiology), four (4) semesters or a total of 16 credits in chemistry (to include General/Inorganic, Organic and Biochemistry).

Students who have not completed an undergraduate major in Nutrition must complete the following undergraduate courses or the equivalent as prerequisites to the Master of Science program:

HSN 100 - Concepts in Nutrition
HSN 101 - Contemporary Nutrition Strategies
HSN 211 - Medical Nutrition Therapy I
HSN 212 - Medical Nutrition Therapy II

Applicants to the graduate program must submit their credentials to the Graduate Admissions Office for review by the program faculty. The application code is NTR.

Students who meet the standards for admission (including a 2.75 in their major) may be matriculated upon admission to the program. Other students, after fulfilling admission and undergraduate requirements and completing 12 graduate credits with an average of "B" or better, may apply through the academic advisor to the Graduate Admissions Office for matriculated status. No more that 12 graduate credits may be taken by a limited matriculated students.

M.S. candidates applying to the Dietetic Internship (DI) must complete the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) academic requirements of the American Dietetic Association prior to the start of the internship. A separate supplemental application is required for the DI (see program description).
