This program focuses on the development of the whole child from
Birth through Grade 2 and includes student-teaching opportunities
so you'll spend valuable time observing and working with young
children. Your courses and field experience will help you understand

issues such as teaching in a multicultural environment and the importance
of playtime in early childhood development. Extend your certification
to cover Bilingual Education.

This Master of Science degree prepares students to develop and
teach innovative curricula for children in Grades 1 to 6. Teachers
trained in this area are in high demand. This program is appropriate
for students who have a bachelor's degree but no undergraduate
preparation in education, and for students who already possess significant
background in education, including those who have earned provisional
teacher certification. Courses cover topics such as the American

educational goals and objectives, contemporary philosophies and

unfamiliar to you. Many students in our local schools face this
problem on a daily basis. C.W. Post's outstanding TESOL program
prepares you to help children in all grades overcome language barriers
and learn how to effectively speak the English language. You will
develop a greater awareness of the special needs of children in
multilingual/multicultural school districts. This highly specialized
program - which prepares you for NYS certification - also
provides advanced training for experienced TESOL teachers, supervisors
and administrators. In order to pursue this degree, you must demonstrate
oral and written proficiency in the English language and possess
knowledge of a foreign language and/or culture equivalent to that
of a one-year college program.
M.S. IN ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION
The Adolescence Education programs are for students who are interested
in teaching a specific academic subject to Grades 7 to 12. C.W.
Post offers graduate preparation in six subject areas: Biology,
Earth Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Spanish.
M.S. IN MIDDLE CHILDHOOD EDUCATION*
Middle Childhood Education is a new category of certification created
under the 1998 New York State Education Department's programmatic
revisions. This program focuses on helping students in Grades 5
to 9 with the transition from the self-contained classrooms of elementary
education to the departmentalized schedules of high school. The
degree requires a concentration in one of six subject areas - Biology,
Earth Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Spanish -
and will qualify you to teach the academic subject area to this
population. Like all C.W. Post education programs, this new degree
includes excellent opportunities for student-teaching, giving you
the valuable experience of observing and working with children.
Your courses and field experience will help you understand the complexities
and principles of children's development at this pivotal point
in their lives.
* Extension in Middle Childhood Education
Teachers who are certified for Adolescence Education (Grades
7 to 12) can broaden their qualifications to cover Middle Childhood
Education by adding Grades 5 and 6 to their certification. Teachers
who complete this 6 credit certification extension may teach their
academic concentration to children as young as 5th and 6th grade
in schools that have begun subject-specific classes at that level.
M.S.ED. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
Teaching students with special needs can be a particularly rewarding
and challenging career path. This program prepares you to create
effective learning environments for three types of students: mentally
handicapped, emotionally disturbed and learning disabled. These
three areas of specialization are incorporated into one comprehensive
program that covers Grades 1 to 6. Study classroom management and
the diagnosis and correction of learning disabilities. Learn about
inclusion techniques - a trend toward keeping special education
children in regular classes while also providing additional assistance
in that setting. Elective courses include the use of technology
in special education, understanding the neurologically impaired
child, and the psychology and education of autistic children. Supervised
student-teaching opportunities will give you real-world experience
with this special population.

M.S. IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
The C.W. Post Master's degree in Educational Technology is
nationally recognized for its innovative and ground-breaking approach
to the use of technology in teaching and learning systems. This
unique program has produced graduates who are literally revolutionizing
curriculum in K-12 schools and other educational programs. The program
uses a cohort approach called T.E.A.M. (short for Technology, Education
and Multimedia). T.E.A.M.s are made up of 25 to 30 students who
stay together from the start of the program until its completion
two years later. You will be teamed up with students who match your
experience and career goals and together you will emerge as teachers
with expertise in telecommunications, the Internet and multi-media.
You can use these skills to transform and enrich a variety of teaching
and learning experiences. You can still teach music, math, history,
English, or whatever your area of specialty is, but you will teach
it with greater creativity and a wider knowledge of learning applications
that incorporate emerging technologies. Your classes may take place
on campus, in a local museum or in the elementary school where you
work. It all depends on the makeup of your T.E.A.M. and the subject
at hand. Courses include Telecommunications: The Internet and Beyond;
Electronic Communications and Writing; and Electronic Classrooms
and The Redesigned Curriculum. A pioneering aspect of the Computers
in Education program is the Electronic
Educational Village (EEV) - an online and in-person dynamic
learning community that has won national acclaim from the Smithsonian
Institution. The EEV is led by C.W. Post faculty and T.E.A.M. members
who collaborate with school districts and cultural and community
resources like museums, nature preserves and businesses.
EEV participants (including T.E.A.M. students) develop projects
that lead learners through scientific, historical and literary adventures,
both in real-life and on the web (see http://eev.liu.edu/eev03).
You will learn how to guide these learners as they take exciting
field trips, create art exhibits, convert material to an online
format, and post ideas, educational materials and class assignments
on the Internet. Village partners - like Cablevision, Newsday, the
Heckscher Museum of Art, Atlantis Marine World and Verizon - help
bring non-traditional, hands-on learning experiences to T.E.A.M.
members and the Electronic Educational Village.
M.S.ED. IN SCHOOL BUILDING LEADER
Our master's degree equips today's educators with the skills they
need to effectively balance six essential components of successful
school district administration: human relations, leadership, school-community
relations, research, school business, and technology. In addition
to coursework in subject areas ranging from school plant planning
to youth problems to school law, you will gain valuable insight
from our outstanding team of professors - all of whom are active
in their specialized fields. Under the mentorship of a school administrator,
you will complete a 400-hour hands-on administrative internship.
Completion of this curriculum will qualify you for certification
in School Building Leader.
AUTISM CONCENTRATION

social workers and families to respond to the special needs of this
unique population. The concentration in Autism is available to those
enrolled in the B.S./M.S.Ed.
program in Childhood Education/Special Education or the M.S.Ed.
