The Tuition Remission Plan is available to our full-time employees and to dependents of our full-time employees. The benefits apply to our full-time employees for credit courses at most schools and colleges of the University.
Tuition Remission may not be applied to application fees, late registration or late payment fees, program change fees, maintenance matriculation fees, health insurance fees, or courses taught on a per capita/individual instruction basis; nor may tuition remission be applied to non-credit courses except for employees where such non-credit courses can reasonably be expected to contribute to the employee’s job performance.
Candidates for tuition remission, whether pursuing full time or part-time courses of study, are required to complete the Federal PELL application. The determination of the distribution of the PELL Grant, to the student’s tuition and fee cost, to the University’s remission cost, to other student costs, shall be made by the Financial Aid Office, upon review of eligibility for Financial Aid.
Students receiving tuition remission and living within Zone 1 (commuting distance) are not eligible for dormitory accommodations until all tuition-paying students have been accommodated. Students receiving tuition remission and residing outside Zone 1 are eligible for dormitory accommodations on the same basis as tuition-paying students.
No student receiving tuition remission is eligible for a monetary award; an academic award to a student with tuition remission will be limited to an honorary award and will not have a dollar value.

Employee’s dependents applying for full-time courses of study are required to complete citizen entitlement award applications including New York State’s student Payment Application. The New York State award will be applied first to the student’s tuition expense and second to reduce the University’s remission expense.
Application for tuition remission must be completed and submitted to the Benefits Department at the University Center at least one month before the registration period for each member of the family for whom tuition remission benefits are sought. Failure to apply for tuition benefits will result in forfeiture of registration for courses.
If the tuition application is approved, remission status will remain in force throughout the balance of the academic year provided that the applicant retains an active employment status and, if applicable, the spouse and /or dependent retain the status to which tuition remission benefits accrue. Additional applications must be submitted for each succeeding academic year for which remission benefits are sought. Adjunct faculty members and their dependents must apply for tuition remission every semester.
Registration for courses for which remission is sought will not be recognized without the timely completion and processing of the appropriate remission application and citizen entitlement award application forms. Also, please note that the student must respond to their bill by returning the Bursar copy with explanation of coverage.
