Residency
Requirements
Generally, in order to
receive a bachelor’s degree from the C.W. Post Campus of Long
Island University, you must complete a minimum of 129 credits (128
for transfer students). All students must complete their final 32
credits (including 9 credits in the major and/or minor) in residency
at C.W. Post. Associate’s degree holders admitted to C.W.
Post under the ASORAD program must complete a minimum of 56 credits
in residence, 9 of which are in the major. Business Administration
and Accountancy students must complete at least 50% of their major
requirements in residence.

Attending
Another Institution
Students who wish to
take courses (including summer courses) at another institution while
enrolled at C.W. Post must petition the Academic Standing Committee
for permission, stating the reason for the request. Permission is
not automatic, and is generally not granted for students who are
on Academic Probation or who have an outstanding debt to the University.
If permission is granted, the student must then see his or her Academic
Counselor to fill out a Visiting Student Authorization form, which
will provide appropriate authorization to the other school.
Contact your Academic
Counselor for assistance in making your initial request.

G.P.A.
Requirements
Students must maintain
a G.P.A. of 2.00, and a major average of 2.25 in order to remain
in good academic standing and in order to graduate. These averages
are higher for some majors (e.g. Education, Social Work, Accounting).
Consult with your Academic Counselor for specific G.P.A. requirements.

Academic
Probation
Students may be placed
on Academic Probation for any of the following:
-
Semester average
is less than 2.0
-
Low cumulative
average (as stipulated by major department)
-
Low major average
(as stipulated by major department)
-
Failure to complete
at least half of the semester course load

Leave
of Absence
Students generally must
register for courses each Fall and Spring semester until graduated.
If you do not plan to register for the next regular semester, you
should contact the Academic Counseling Center to apply for a leave
of absence. A student who is in good academic standing (and who
does not owe an outstanding debt to the University) may apply for
a leave of up to one year. The final decision to grant (or deny)
the leave is made by the Academic Standing Committee.
Students are NOT allowed
to attend another institution while on leave. A continuing student
who does not register for a Fall or Spring semester is considered
to be withdrawn from C.W. Post, and must reapply if he or she wishes
to resume studies. In this event, the readmitted student will be
bound by the academic requirements in effect at the time of readmission.

Full
Time vs. Part Time Status
Undergraduate students
taking 12 or more credits in a regular semester are considered full-time.
Because Weekend College sessions have different start and end dates
from the "regular" Fall and Spring sessions, they are
NOT considered as part of the 12-credit minimum for the purposes
of billing and most scholarships.
You should note, however,
that certain financial aid programs, insurance companies, etc. may
have different definitions of what constitutes "full-time"
status. If you are unsure about full-time status for certain purposes,
consult with the relevant office or organization.

Grading
Possible grades are:
A 4.00
A- 3.67
B+ 3.33
B 3.00
B- 2.67
C+ 2.33
C 2.00
C- 1.67
D 1.00 (undergraduate only)
F 0.00
I or INC: incomplete
- indicates some course requirements not completed*
W: withdrawal - student opted to withdraw from course (by withdrawal
deadline date)
UW: unauthorized withdrawal - student stopped attending but did
not officially withdraw
*An incomplete grade is replaced with a final grade (preceded
by an I) when the work is completed. It is expected that all work
in courses for which a student receives an incomplete grade will
be made up within one regular semester; any changes after that
time must be approved by instructor, chair and dean.
A notation of NGR in
place of a grade indicates No Grade was Recorded. Note that there
is no official correlation between percentage scores (0-100 scale)
and letter grades.

Pass/Fail
Option
You may elect to take
a course on a pass/fail basis. If you select this option, any passing
final grade (A through D) will be recorded on your transcript as
a P, and the course will not be computed into your GPA. A grade
of F will be recorded and computed normally.
Courses used to fulfill
core requirements may NOT be taken on a pass/fail basis. Courses
in a students major or minor are also generally not to be
taken pass/fail, although under special circumstances this is allowed
with the written permission of the appropriate chair.
You may take the pass/fail
option for up to two courses per year (electives only). Students
who opt pass/fail are NOT eligible for Deans List or Honors
List for that year. The deadline to opt for pass/fail is the same
as the deadline for withdrawal, usually about 10 weeks into a regular
semester.
Certain courses are ONLY
offered on a P/F basis. These courses are not subject to the above
restrictions.

Graduation
with Honors
The GPA requirements
for graduation with honors are:
|
summa cum laude
|
3.90 - 4.00
|
|
magna cum laude
|
3.70 - 3.89
|
|
cum laude
|
3.50 - 3.69
|
At least 56 credits (with
grades of A through F) must be earned in residence. Courses taken
on a pass/fail basis and Life Experience credits are NOT counted
towards this 56 credit minimum.
Graduation with honors
should not be confused with completion of the Honors
Program, which is a separate distinction.
