The Relationship Between Long Island University
and Yonsei University University
Yonsei University, the oldest in Korea, was established
near Seoul in 1885. Through the ongoing efforts of Protestant missionaries,
it became an integrated university and medical complex in 1957 with the
union of Chosun Christian University, and Severance Union Medical College.
Since its founding, Yonsei University has remained a meld of Korean and
Western elements and kept an international focus. Thanks to its unique origins,
Yonsei is noted for its emphasis on Englsih, and in fact, its Division of
Internationa Education and the Graduate School of International Studies
are taught entirely in English.
The relationship between Long Island University and Yonsei University was
a natural. Yonsei's historical and international influences, as well as
its emphasis on the English language were counterbalanced by Long Island
University's strong ties to Korea through its exchange programs, its Korea Center, its Halla Program, and the powerful
support of dedicated alumni, both in the United States and in Korea.
In 1993, Long Island University Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Walter Mathews,
visited Yonsei University as part of a Fulbright International Visitors
group, and the idea of a formal relationship between the two universities
began to grow. Dr. Horace Underwood, Director of International Education
at Yonsei helped catalyze the idea, which also gained strong support from
not only Dr. Mathews, but Dr.
Changboh Chee of the LIU Korea Center, Dr. Johng
Y.T. Kuark, Director of the Halla Program at LIU, and Dr. Anthony Akel,
Director of the LIU School of Business. In June1996, the two universities
signed an agreement promoting international student and faculty exchange.
