William Zeckendorf, Sr. Award

William Zeckendorf, Sr. was one of America's master builders. Our urban landscape was reshaped brilliantly through his vision, energy and acumen and Long Island University was his most prized philanthropic priority. From the time he joined the Board in 1943, during World War II, and until his death in 1976, he worked ceaselessly to build and expand this University. Under his leadership, Long Island University purchased Marjorie Merriweather Post's estate on which the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University was built.

The William Zeckendorf, Sr. Award commemorates his devotion, brilliance and achievement by recognizing an individual who embodies those values of entrepreneurship and achievement that he held so dear. Long Island University is privileged to draw the parallels, to bestow the recognition, and, by doing so, to celebrate the past and present at once.

About William Zeckendorf, Sr. (top of page)

A brilliant developer and planner of real estate, William Zeckendorf, Sr. joined the University in 1942 as a Board of Trustees member. For more than two decades, he served as the Board's Chairman. In 1950, he urged the University to purchase the Brooklyn Paramount Theater and the adjoining office building, thereby establishing the present Brooklyn Campus.

In 1954, Mr. Zeckendorf founded the C.W. Post Campus and he enabled Long Island University to secure the estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post by giving the University the $500,000 needed to purchase the property, along with other gifts to help develop it. He also established Southampton College in 1963.

Outside of his tremendous work for Long Island University, he also acquired the land for the United Nations in Manhattan and served on the executive boards of the America-Korea foundation, the Children's Village, the American Arbitration Association, the American Stock Exchange, New York Infirmary and Manhattan Ear, Eye and Throat Hospital. A New York University alumnus, Mr. Zeckendorf received honorary degrees from Long Island University, American University, Wilberforce University and Chung-ang University in Korea. He was Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Architects.

His work for Long Island University has been described in this way: "Never has any institution of higher learning owed so much to one man."
