On December 6, 2001, the University marked 75 years of providing access to the American dream through excellence in higher education. Fittingly, the University family returned to its roots in Brooklyn, where the institution was originally founded in 1926, gathering for an anniversary dinner at the Brooklyn Marriott.

The event recognized 75 honorees who represent the best of all those connected to Long Island University. Their staggering accomplishments and boundless generosity exemplify the University’s proud tradition of making the American dream a reality.

Over 500 guests including honorees and their families, donors, alumni, faculty members, staff and student leaders from across the University joined in the festivities that included a VIP reception, a cocktail party and a sit-down dinner featuring a candle-lighting ceremony recognizing the honorees.

Proceeds from the dinner were used to establish endowed scholarships in memory of four University students killed in the September 11 attacks, linking their lives to those of future students in perpetuity. A September 11th scholarship fund also has been established to assist those University students who may have emergency scholarship needs due to loss of immediate family members.

The following pages offer a glimpse of the event and the many people who came together to celebrate the continued growth of an institution of higher learning that has touched the lives of people throughout the metropolitan area, across the nation and around the globe.

University trustee, the Reverend Dr. Paul Smith, senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, delivers a spirited invocation during the dinner.

Dr. Steinberg congratulates honoree Lillian Huriash Benowitz, first graduate of the very first University graduating class of ’31. Here, she holds a keepsake from her school days.
