Honoree-
Steven Strauss

Dr. Steven Strauss, professor emeritus of pharmacy administration, is a widely published authority in his field. He started on the path to eminence at Long Island University’s Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, where he earned both his B.S. in pharmacy and his M.S. in pharmacy administration. Dr. Strauss emphatically states, “I could not have accomplished what I have without my association with the school.” He went on to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

His connection with the University grew stronger when he joined the faculty as an assistant professor of pharmacy administration in 1966, eventually becoming director of the Division of Pharmacy Administration and director of the Retail Drug Institute. During his tenure, Dr. Strauss created the Master of Science program in drug regulatory affairs, established the Steven Strauss Pharmacy Law Award and created the annual United States-Caribbean Nations Pharmaceutical Conference. He retired in 1998.

A prolific author and editor, his published works include books and articles aimed at various audiences including students and the general public as well as the scientific community. Among his editorial distinctions, Dr. Strauss was the founding editor of U.S. Pharmacist, a consulting editor of American Druggist Blue Book, a member of the editorial advisory board for Clin-Alert and founding publisher of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Advances.

In recognition of his vast professional achievements, he has received distinguished alumnus awards from both of his alma maters and has earned membership in several pharmaceutical honor societies. He is an adjunct member of the New York State Board of Pharmacy and served as founding president of Technomic Publishing Company’s Pharmaceutical Division.

Dr. Strauss and his wife, Bernice, have three sons. The University spirit lives on through their son Robert and his wife, Nicole DeSanctis, both graduates of Southampton College, where Robert is an adjunct assistant professor.
