Honorees-
Jane Ann & Donald Smith
  Dr.
Jane Ann Smith met her husband, Donald Willits Smith, during their
undergraduate days at Swarthmore College. Today, despite divergent
career paths, the college sweethearts share a passion for community
service and an abiding devotion to the Friends World Program. The
couples 10-year relationship with Long Island University began
when Friends World College, originally established by Quakers in
1965, joined the University. Dr. Smith, who served as academic vice
president at the College, and her husband, played an integral role
in shepherding the institution through the merger, helping to shape
the Friends World Program as it exists today. Ten years later, the
couple still serves on the Programs Council of Overseers.
After her retirement from Friends World in 1990, Dr. Smith began
consulting for the National Executive Service Corporation. She holds
a B.A. from Swarthmore, an M.A. from Brooklyn Polytech and a Ph.D.
from Hofstra University. Always an active member of the community,
Dr. Smith is financial chair of the Westbury Friends Meeting and
a board member at Winthrop University Hospital.
Mr. Smith, who earned his B.S. from Swarthmore and his M.S. from
Brooklyn Polytech, became president of Andrews and Clark, Consulting
Engineers and Landscape Architects. A retired civil engineer, his
body of work includes designing many of Long Islands parkways
and parks, most notably planning the Long Island Expressway in Nassau
County and consulting on construction for the New York Worlds
Fair (1964-66). His expertise has enhanced many projects and garnered
him several design awards. Mr. Smiths roots in public works
no doubt encouraged his penchant for public service, an inclination
that continues to be realized through a variety of volunteer efforts.
He has served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity
and as a trustee for the Friends Academy as well as the Village
of East Williston. Mr. Smith, a member of the Westbury Friends Meeting,
is also involved in the reconstruction of semi-historic buildings
and old houses. The Smiths reside in East Williston, New York. They
have three grown children and five grandchildren.
