Philip Wolitzer
 Philip
Wolitzer joined the faculty of the Accounting, Taxation and Law
Department at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University in 1947.
A certified public accountant, he earned his B.B.A. from the City
College of New York and his M.B.A. from New York University. He
also served as a warrant officer in the United States Army. During
his early teaching years, Professor Wolitzer was inspired by the
drive and motivation of the World War II veterans who came to the
University to gain the college education that they had postponed
to go off to war. Since then, he has taught thousands of students,
taking great pride in being able to make a difference in their lives.
In 1964, he was promoted to full professor, also becoming department
chair, a position he held until 1983. During his tenure, Professor
Wolitzer served as the director of the Graduate Capstone Games.
In addition, he became a faculty adviser for the Accounting Society,
chaired numerous faculty committees and instituted the accounting
internship program. He is the recipient of a University presidential
citation and an Alumni Association award. Retiring in 1986, he remains
active in his role as professor emeritus. In October of 1989, the
Wolitzer complex, a state-of-the-art facility for accounting students
named in his honor, was opened at the Campus.
Throughout his career, Professor Wolitzer has remained active in
the accounting profession. He is a member of numerous accounting
organizations and has served as a financial consultant to many businesses.
Professor Wolitzer is the author of 31 articles that have been published
in leading professional journals and one book. In 1971, he was named
Accountant of the Year by the Accounting Society of Adelphi University,
in addition to being named Outstanding Educator of America. Among
his other honors, Professor Wolitzer is also a recipient of the
New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants Distinguished
Service Award. He is active in a wide variety of civic and charitable
organizations.
Professor Wolitzer and his wife, Regina, have two daughters and
one son.
