Honoree-
Philip Wolitzer

Philip Wolitzer joined the faculty of the Accounting, Taxation and Law Department at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University in 1947. A certified public accountant, he earned his B.B.A. from the City College of New York and his M.B.A. from New York University. He also served as a warrant officer in the United States Army. During his early teaching years, Professor Wolitzer was inspired by the drive and motivation of the World War II veterans who came to the University to gain the college education that they had postponed to go off to war. Since then, he has taught thousands of students, taking great pride in being able to make a difference in their lives.

In 1964, he was promoted to full professor, also becoming department chair, a position he held until 1983. During his tenure, Professor Wolitzer served as the director of the Graduate Capstone Games. In addition, he became a faculty adviser for the Accounting Society, chaired numerous faculty committees and instituted the accounting internship program. He is the recipient of a University presidential citation and an Alumni Association award. Retiring in 1986, he remains active in his role as professor emeritus. In October of 1989, the Wolitzer complex, a state-of-the-art facility for accounting students named in his honor, was opened at the Campus.

Throughout his career, Professor Wolitzer has remained active in the accounting profession. He is a member of numerous accounting organizations and has served as a financial consultant to many businesses. Professor Wolitzer is the author of 31 articles that have been published in leading professional journals and one book. In 1971, he was named Accountant of the Year by the Accounting Society of Adelphi University, in addition to being named Outstanding Educator of America. Among his other honors, Professor Wolitzer is also a recipient of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Distinguished Service Award. He is active in a wide variety of civic and charitable organizations.
