Richard & Edward Neimeth
  The
Neimeths family association with Long Island University dates
back to 1930, when Dr. Edward Neimeth became a member of the Brooklyn
College of Pharmacy (now the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) board of trustees. Dr. Neimeth,
a graduate of the Columbia University College of Pharmacy was already
well on his way to becoming a highly successful businessman after
founding the National Magnesia Company at age 22. He later assumed
its presidency. In 1938, he became head of Beth Moses Hospital.
When it merged with Israel Zion Hospital in 1947 to form Maimonides,
the largest voluntary hospital in Brooklyn, he was elected its first
president.
Dr. Neimeth served as chairman of the board of trustees of the
Brooklyn College of Pharmacy for more than 35 years. During his
tenure, he supported numerous initiatives including the establishment
of the Research Institute; the development of a radioisotope teaching
and research labor-atory; and the founding of the Division of Extension
Studies as well as the Graduate College.
Dr. Neimeth received an honorary doctorate from the College of
Pharmacy in 1957, he also received an award in later years from
the Colleges alumni association. In addition to his involvement
with the University, he served as a trustee and member of numerous
philanthropic and health-related organizations that honored him
not only for his achievements, but for his passion for improving
the lot of the sick and indigent. He died in 1978, but his legacy
and his generosity live on through his son Richard.
Richard Neimeth earned his B.A. from Cornell University in 1950
and attended the M.B.A. program in pharmaceutical business administration
at the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1958. Now retired, Mr. Neimeth
served as founder and chairman of the board of NMC Laboratories,
a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in Queens, New York; as president
of National Magnesia Company, founded by his late father in Queens,
New York; and as vice president and partner of Major Pharmaceutical
Company, a generic drug wholesale distributor in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Neimeth credits the education he received from the College
of Pharmacy with enabling him to build new business on the great
foundation provided by his father. In return, he has given of his
time and financial resources to help the College attract a new generation
of multi-ethnic, multi-racial students. He served as the chairman
of the Colleges Council of Overseers and truly understands
the importance of continued interaction between the dean, faculty,
students and trustees as playing a critical factor in the vitality
of the institution. His most fulfilling moment throughout his years
of association with the College was when he received an honorary
doctorate in 1994 and witnessed hundreds of new and minority Americans
receiving their degrees as well.
In addition to his involvement with the College of Pharmacy, Mr.
Neimeth served as a member of the board of trustees of Long Island
University as well as a member of boards of numerous, health, religious
and arts related organizations. He and his wife, Peggy, have four
children and 10 grandchildren.
