Honoree-
Michael A. Soupios
 In
1971, Michael Soupios enrolled at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University to pursue masters degrees in history and education,
initiating a more than 30-year association with the institution.
He earned an additional masters degree in political science
from the Campus in 1976.
In 1977, he was hired as the assistant to the vice president for
academic affairs at Post, and was later promoted to assistant vice
president for academic affairs. His responsibilities broadened to
a University level when he was named dean for academic planning
and evaluation in 1984, becoming the youngest dean appointed in
LIU history. He served in this position for one year before being
named University dean for liberal arts and sciences. In 1988, he
returned to the classroom, where he remains to this day as one of
the most popular professors at C.W. Post. So beloved is he by his
students, that they raised more than $150,000 in donations to name
a lecture hall in his honor. He also had a lecture series established
by a private donor (Diaz Lectures in Classical Civilization) for
which he was named presenter in perpetuity in honor of his distinguished
work in the classroom.
In addition to the degrees he earned at Post, Dr. Soupios holds
a B.A. in history from St. Lawrence College; an Ed.D. in administration-higher
education from Columbia University; a Ph.D. in philosophical studies
from SUNY Buffalo; and a Ph.D. in political science from Fordham
University. In 1997, he earned an M.A. in theology from the Seminary
of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York. He is currently
studying for a fourth doctorate, a D.Th. from the Seminary. He is
the author of European Political Theory and The
Song of Hellas, a complete but unpublished manuscript, in
addition to many academic papers.
Dr. Soupios is the recipient of numerous awards including the Hutton
House Lecture Series Teacher of the Year Award and the Newton Award
for Teaching Excellence.
A long-distance runner, he has participated in more than 50 ultra-marathon
events including ten 100-mile races. Dr. Soupios resides with his
