Martin Tucker
 For
more than 43 years, Dr. Martin Tucker has touched the lives of students
at the Brooklyn and C.W. Post Campuses of Long Island University.
He began teaching as an adjunct professor in the English Department
in Brooklyn in 1956. In 1958, he became a full professor, later
serving as chair of the English department from 1976-1982. Dr. Tucker
is the editor of the prize-winning literary journal Confrontation,
a semiannual periodical published by the University. A founding
member of the publications editorial board, he has served
as editor-in-chief since 1970. Confrontation has published the original
works of seven Nobel laureates, in addition to works by Arthur Miller,
Cynthia Ozick, Joyce Carol Oates, William Styron, Bayard Rustin,
Denise Levertov and Paul Theroux.
Dr. Tucker began teaching in the English department at C.W. Post
in 1983, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. He remains
active in his role as professor emeritus, continuing to edit Confrontation.
The satisfaction of many years of helping his students to attain
personal and professional growth has been an enormously enriching
experience for him. He remains in touch with many of them.
Dr. Tucker earned his B.A. and Ph.D. from New York University and
his M.A. from the University of Arizona. He served as a member of
the Long Island University Faculty Senate and co-chaired the C.W.
Post Accreditation Committee. In 1980, he received the Trustees
Award for Scholarly Achievement. He is the author of two collections
of poetry, Homes of Locks and Mysteries and Attention
Spans, in addition to several literary studies. His reviews,
essays and stories have appeared in some of the most widely read
and well-respected newspapers and magazines in the country. He has
served as poet-in-residence at Cairo American College in Egypt and
distinguished visiting professor at Florida International University
in Miami. Dr. Tucker currently resides in Longboat Key, Florida.
