Louis Lemberger’s fascination with pharmacology began at Long Island University’s Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1956. Here, he was introduced to the exciting world of scientific and medical research by Dr. Shirley Kraus (see page 26). This encounter paved the way for his highly successful career and international recognition in the fields of pharmacology and clinical research. After earning his B.S. in pharmacy, he went on to earn both a Ph.D. in pharmacology and an M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Lemberger conducted research at the National Institutes of Health, before joining the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research and Indiana University School of Medicine. At Eli Lilly, he advanced to the position of director of clinical pharmacology. He was named Lilly Clinical Research Fellow at the time of his retirement in 1993. His achievements include being the first person to administer and study the actions in humans of the antidepressant drug Prozac; the drug Permax, used to treat Parkinson’s disease; Cesamet, the cannabinoid drug utilized for the treatment of nausea in chemotherapy patients; and Zyprexa, the drug utilized in the treatment of schizophrenia. He is currently professor of pharmacology, medicine and psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and also lectures in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota, sharing his knowledge with a new generation of pharmacists, medical students and medical researchers.

Dr. Lemberger is the recipient of numerous awards including the Harry Gold Award for Excellence in Research and Teaching in Clinical Pharmacology and an honorary doctorate from the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He has served as president of both the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
