Lembergers fascination with pharmacology began at Long Island
Universitys Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1956. Here, he
was introduced to the exciting world of scientific and medical research
by Dr. Shirley Kraus (see page 26). This encounter paved the way
for his highly successful career and international recognition in
the fields of pharmacology and clinical research. After earning
his B.S. in pharmacy, he went on to earn both a Ph.D. in pharmacology
and an M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Lemberger conducted research at the National Institutes of
Health, before joining the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research
and Indiana University School of Medicine. At Eli Lilly, he advanced
to the position of director of clinical pharmacology. He was named
Lilly Clinical Research Fellow at the time of his retirement in
1993. His achievements include being the first person to administer
and study the actions in humans of the antidepressant drug Prozac;
the drug Permax, used to treat Parkinsons disease; Cesamet,
the cannabinoid drug utilized for the treatment of nausea in chemotherapy
patients; and Zyprexa, the drug utilized in the treatment of schizophrenia.
He is currently professor of pharmacology, medicine and psychiatry
at Indiana University School of Medicine and also lectures in the
Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota, sharing
his knowledge with a new generation of pharmacists, medical students
and medical researchers.
Dr. Lemberger is the recipient of numerous awards including the
Harry Gold Award for Excellence in Research and Teaching in Clinical
Pharmacology and an honorary doctorate from the Arnold & Marie
Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He has served
as president of both the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental
Therapeutics and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology
and Therapeutics. He is listed in Whos Who in America and
American Men and Women in Science. He resides in Indiana with his
wife, Myrna. The Lembergers have two daughters and two grandchildren.
