Honoree-
Julian Mates

Dr. Julian Mates earned his B.A. from Brooklyn College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. After early teaching positions with City College of New York and Hofstra, Dr. Mates became an integral part of the Post faculty in 1959.

In addition to fulfilling his classroom duties, Dr. Mates held a host of administrative positions. He was largely responsible for the creation of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the Campus, serving as its dean from 1974-1987. In 1983, he was named University dean of the Faculty of Visual and Performing Arts responsible for overseeing arts curricula across the University’s campuses. He also served as director of the writing center and as graduate adviser for the English Department. Among Dr. Mates’ most significant contributions to the C.W. Post Campus was the creation of the American Theatre Festival. As founder and director, he shepherded the annual event through its early years; it has become a treasured C.W. Post tradition. He retired in 1997.

Dr. Mates has authored over 40 publications and book reviews. In addition to being a sought-after lecturer, his involvement in the theater community includes executive committee membership for Lincoln Center’s conference, “The History of American Popular entertainment” from which the Broadway show, “Sugar Babies” emerged. He also speaks several times a year for the New York Council for the Humanities on “200 years of the American Musical Theatre.” Dr. Mates lends his expertise to the University of Illinois, Yale University, the City University of New York and the Smithsonian Institution as an evaluator of manuscripts and research projects.

His achievements have been recognized by administrators and students alike. Dr. Mates received the Hofstra College Faculty Fellowship and the Long Island University Trustee Award for Scholarly Achievement. C.W. Post students twice honored him with yearbook dedications for his devotion to teaching.

Dr. Mates and his wife, Barbara Fowles, who chairs the media arts department at C.W. Post, live in Glen Cove, New York. They have two daughters, a son and a grandson.
