Honoree-
Joseph Shenker
 Joe
Shenker is an unassuming man who builds great things. As Provost
of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University since 1995, Dr.
Shenker has spearheaded unprecedented growth and success for the
Brookville campus, which serves 11,000 students. While he is known
for his gentle nature and quiet resolve, Joe Shenker has demonstrated
powerful leadership skills. His many accomplishments at C.W. Post
include $37 million in new construction and renovations, elite accreditations
for academic programs, integration of extensive new technology,
increased scholarships, development of award-winning co-op and career
services, and a 22% increase in enrollment. His accomplishments
at C.W. Post are characteristic of the incredible success he has
enjoyed over a 30-year career in higher education. In 1970, at the
age of 30, he was named president of the not-yet-built LaGuardia
Community College in Queens, a new unit of The City University of
New York. As president, he literally built the college from the
ground up, overseeing $100 million in construction and expanding
enrollment from 500 students to more than 16,000.
In 1988, he was appointed president of the elite Bank Street College
of Education in New York City, where he raised $13 million for the
school. Dr. Shenker received his masters degree from Hunter
College and his doctorate in economics and higher education from
Teachers College, Columbia University. He currently serves on the
board of directors for the Wallace-Readers Digest Funds, which
awards $70 million in education and arts grants each year.
