Joan Templeton
 Henrik
Ibsen expert Joan Templeton has been a member of the Brooklyn Campus
English Department since 1966. She began teaching there after earning
her B.A. from Centenary College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the
University of Oregon. Dr. Templeton has served on numerous University
committees, including those handling searches for presidents, chancellors
and deans. She was the faculty representative for the search committee
that appointed current University President, Dr. David J. Steinberg,
and chaired the search committee that named Dr. David Cohen dean
of the Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in
Brooklyn. She has served as a member of the University Faculty Senate
and the Brooklyn Campus Faculty Senate. Dr. Templeton also has chaired
the Brooklyn Campus English department and the Faculty Review Committee,
as well as serving as the president of the Brooklyn Campus chapter
of the American Association of University Professors.
An accomplished author and scholar, her book, Ibsens
Women, chronicles the women in Henrik Ibsens life and
art; it was published to wide acclaim by Cambridge University Press
in 1997 and has just been issued in paperback. She also is the author
of 25 articles in refereed journals, as well as numerous book and
production reviews. Dr. Templeton is listed in Whos Who in
America, Whos Who in American Women and Outstanding Scholars
of the 20th Century.
She has received two Fulbright Grants and has been named National
Endowment for the Humanities Research Scholar (1987-1988); American
Scandinavian Foundation Research Scholar (1988-2000); and University
of Oslo Research Scholar (1998). She is president of The Ibsen Society
of America and editor of Ibsen News and Comment.
Long Island University has acknowledged her accomplishments and
dedication by bestowing upon her the Trustee Award for Scholarly
Achievement in 1999 and the David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence
in 2000. She is currently planning the 10th International Ibsen
Conference, to be held at the Brooklyn Campus in 2003.
