Honoree-
Harry A. Marmion
 Born
and raised in New York City, just five miles from the National Tennis
Center, Harry A. Marmion excelled in several careers before becoming
the 43rd president of the United States Tennis Association. His
early professional experience included working as an attorney for
the Securities and Exchange Commission, in addition to working for
the U.S. Department of Labor and as a federal relations specialist
with the U.S. Congress.
At age 37, Dr. Marmion assumed the first of two college presidencies
he would hold, serving as president of St. Xavier College in Chicago.
In 1972, he was appointed president of Southampton College of Long
Island University. Outgoing and accessible, he typified the human
touch for which the College is known, increasing enrollment and
positioning the College as a liberal arts institution with specialties
in the sciences and fine arts. During his tenure, Southampton students
won the Colleges first three Fulbright scholarships, which
now total 35. In 1980, he was appointed vice president for academic
affairs and professor of law and management at Fairleigh Dickinson
University.
During the early 1980s, Dr. Marmion became involved with the United
States Tennis Association and was elected president of the Eastern
Tennis Association. He was a ranked senior player in the East in
mens 50s, 55s and mixed doubles. This important distinction
helped to pave his way as a leader in tennis administration. He
served for 12 years on the USTA board. In 1997, he was elected president
and chairman of the board, presiding over the opening of the $274
million USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Upon his retirement from the presidency, he played an integral role
in electing Judy Levering as the first female president of the USTA.
Dr. Marmion holds an undergraduate degree from Fairfield University,
law degrees from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. from the University
of Connecticut. He also served for 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps
Reserves, retiring as a colonel. He received an honorary doctorate
from Southampton College in 1998. Dr. Marmion lives in Southampton,
New York with his wife, Patricia. The Marmions have three daughters
