Honorees-
The Hallman & Lorber Families

For 40 years, Long Island University has been a mainstay in the
lives of the Hallman and Lorber families. Louis Hallman is a professor
emeritus of accounting at C.W. Post. His wife, Beatrice, and daughters,
Thea and Frances, all earned their undergraduate degrees from the
Campus, majoring in history, sociology and education, respectively.
It was there that Thea met her future husband, classmate Howard
Lorber.
Mr. Lorber, who graduated with a B.A. in sociology and later an
M.S. in taxation, has enjoyed enormous success in a wide variety
of business ventures. His financial savvy and innovative managerial
style have afforded him the opportunity to head several highly successful
companies. Most visible as CEO and president of Nathans Famous,
Inc., he is also president of both the Miami-based New Valley Corporation
(formerly Western Union Corp.) and Vector Group Ltd., as well as
chairman of Ladenberg Thalman Financial Services.
In addition to meeting the demands of his hectic professional life,
Mr. Lorber is dedicated to making a difference in other arenas.
Since 1988, Mr. Lorber has served as a University trustee. During
his tenure, he has made a number of contributions to the C.W. Post
Campus, as both volunteer and donor. Mr. Lorber is a member of the
C.W. Post Chancellors Council and in 1995 made a gift of $450,000,
and an additional pledge of $500,000 in 2000, to help restore the
building that houses the School of Professional Accountancy. Newly
refurbished, the mansion where Mr. Lorber attended classes as an
accounting student has been renamed Lorber Hall. It now boasts smart
classrooms, a lecture hall and a library. Along with his work on
behalf of the University, he is a trustee for Babson College and
chairman of the National Center for Victims of Crime.
Mr. Lorbers tireless efforts have been repeatedly recognized
by the communities he serves. The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University awarded him a Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1988 and
an honorary doctorate in 2001. He also has been the recipient of
the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and was named Man of the Year by
both the Five Towns Community Chest and the Hebrew Academy of Nassau
County.
The Lorbers, who have two children, boast yet another family tie
to C.W. Post Mr. Lorbers brother Scott also graduated
from the Campus, earning a B.S. in accounting.
