Honoree-
Gordon Hoxie

Dr. R. Gordon Hoxie, an Iowa native, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa; his master’s from the University of Wisconsin; and his doctorate from Columbia University. A graduate of the Air War College and a retired brigadier general, Dr. Hoxie was Post’s first dean and subsequently served as its provost and president in addition to serving as Long Island University chancellor. He credits his years at C.W. Post with inspiring his interest in educational institutions and was deeply impressed by the dedication and creativity of its faculty members.

In 1968, he resigned his academic post and founded the Center for the Study of the Presidency, the foremost educational institution in the United States devoted to the study of the presidency, government and politics. Dr. Hoxie served as the Center’s first president and later as its chairman. Today, he remains an active board member. He has served as an aide to President Eisenhower and as a consultant to both the State Department and the Department of Defense.

His international achievements include founding the American Friends of Chung-Ang University in 1963 and serving as its president for 36 years. He also served as the president of the Public Members Association of Foreign Service from 1973-1979. He is a published author, editor and contributor to more than a dozen volumes on the American presidency and on foreign national security policy, and is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees including one from Long Island University (1995). He resides with his wife, Dr. Ada Hoxie, in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
