Honoree-
Gale Stevens Haynes
 For
more than three decades, Gale Stevens Haynes life has been
entwined with Long Island University. Her educational and professional
roots go back to the days when she earned her B.S. in English in
1972 and her M.S. in counseling in 1976 from the Brooklyn Campus.
Upon graduation, she was employed as the director of the Campus
Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). In 1987, after earning
her law degree at St. Johns University, she was appointed
legal counsel at University Center. She returned to Brooklyn in
1989 after being named provost, overseeing a renaissance on the
Campus that very few people thought could ever possibly occur. Under
her leadership, the Campus enrollment has climbed steadily
for the past 10 years.
Humble to the core, she credits her dedicated colleagues with
providing the energy and insight needed to fuel this period of unprecedented
growth and expansion. When asked about the wealth of contributions
she has made to the University and the Brooklyn Campus, she modestly
cites the many contributions that they have made to her own development
as a person and as a professional. She credits her University experience
with making her a sound and careful thinker who is open minded,
creative and passionate.
In addition to her duties as provost, Ms. Stevens Haynes is active
in the local community. She is a member of the Downtown Brooklyn
Development Council Executive Committee and chairs the Community
Affairs Committee for BAM Local Development Corporation. She is
a member of the New York State Bar Association, the New York State
Higher Education Professional Organization and the American Bar
Association, and serves as the New York coordinator for the American
Council of Education National Identification Program. Ms. Stevens
Haynes is the recipient of honorary degrees from St. Josephs
College and the International College of the Cayman Islands.
Her greatest personal achievement raising three beautiful,
generous, independent daughters, Pilar, Pia and Mia. Twins Pia and
Mia graduated from the Brooklyn Campus in 2000, continuing the family
tradition.
