Donald L. Ungarelli
 Donald
L. Ungarellis association with Long Island University started
in 1956 when he began his undergraduate studies in English at the
C.W. Post Campus. During those early years he excelled in varsity
athletics, winning letters in football, soccer, wrestling and baseball.
He later went on to receive his masters degrees in library
and information science and education from C.W. Post and his doctorate
in library management from Simmons College. His academic career
began in 1961 with his appointment to the C.W. Post library faculty;
he was subsequently appointed director of libraries in 1970. Besides
his academic and administrative appointments, he continued to coach
C.W. Posts varsity soccer team well into the 1970s. President
Steinberg appointed him dean of University libraries in 1985, charging
him with the integration of the Universitys collections in
addition to overseeing the staff, services and automation of all
the campus libraries.
He is a member of the American Library Association, the American
Society for Information Science and Technology and the National
Fire Protection Association. Dr. Ungarelli has presented numerous
papers and talks at local and national conferences and has been
published in many professional journals. His writings on library
insurance, risk management and loss prevention have been widely
recognized. He continues to serve on the editorial board of the
journal, Library and Archival Security.
Dr. Ungarelli enjoys gardening, reading, international travel and
making wine. He especially loves spending time with his two daughters,
his son-in-law and his three grandsons.
