Honoree-
David Cohen
 As
a young man, David Cohens interest in science led him to enroll
at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University, where he earned
his B.S. in biology in 1963. In 1966, he completed his M.S. in biology
from LIU and began teaching there the same year in the Biology Department.
He never left, enjoying a highly successful academic and administrative
career, witnessing the years of change and growth that continue
to make Brooklyn one of the fastest growing, most ethnically diverse
college campuses in the New York metropolitan area.
He has held numerous academic and administrative titles over the
years, rising through the ranks to become a full professor of biology
with tenure and the dean of the Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences, the largest academic unit of the Brooklyn Campus.
He has many fond memories of his years as a student, professor,
and administrator and is deeply grateful to his colleagues at the
Campus whose friendship and support have helped to shape his career
and influence and guide him as a teacher and administrator.
Dean Cohen holds a Ph.D in biology from New York University. His
research on rhizoid cell differentiation has been published by the
American Journal of Botany. Since 1978, he has overseen grant-writing
initiatives totaling more than $3.2 million.
The Deans three sons have all taken advantage of the excellent
quality of education that Long Island University provides. Brad,
his eldest son, earned his bachelors degree in political science
and his masters degree in criminal justice from the C.W. Post
Campus and currently works in the Provosts Office at the Brooklyn
Campus. His sons, Russell and Jason, both earned their B.S./M.S.
in physical therapy from the Brooklyn Campus. The Dean and his wife,
Helen, reside in Lake Grove, New York.
