Charles Hitchcock
 Charles
Hitchcock began his career at Southampton College as a lecturer
in 1967. Currently the director of the Division of Social Sciences
at Southampton College, he is regularly quoted in the media as an
expert on social minorities, American subcultures and the sociology
of education. Prior to accepting his current appointments as division
head and professor of sociology, he served as director of special
academic services, director of counseling and director of the Higher
Education Opportunity Program.
A sociologist with a specialty in community studies, the Town of
East Hampton is more than a research interest for Dr. Hitchcock.
He has been active on its civic and political scenes since the 1980s.
He chaired the East Hampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals and the
Committee for Local Control of East Hampton Airport, served on the
Towns democratic committee and was the democratic nominee
for several elected offices. Dr. Hitchcock, who received his bachelors
in political science from Colgate University, his masters
in human relations and community studies from New York University
and his doctorate in sociology from Union Graduate School, is presently
vice-chair of the Alternatives Counseling Centers board of
directors.
Before joining the College, Dr. Hitchcock lectured at the University
of Rajshahi in Bangladesh and was on assignment for the Peace Corps.
He has presented papers at various conferences including a faculty
seminar at Columbia University on human maladaptation, meetings
of the American Psychiatric Association and the National Convention
of the American Orthopsychiatric Association.
Dr. Hitchcock enjoys tennis and travel; he has journeyed extensively
throughout Asia and West Africa.
