Honoree-
Arthur Meyer

Arthur Meyer joined a group of committed Quakers who were determined to provide a genuinely alternative educational path that would lead to a consideration of the world’s most pressing issues. To this end, they founded Friends World College in 1965. With a focus on
experiential education at a global level, they created an institute of higher learning that offers students hands-on opportunities to effect social change. Mr. Meyer worked to advance this mission, serving the College in various capacities including faculty member, director of the North American Center and director of admissions. During his 25-year tenure, he watched the institution expand from a single center to eight centers around the world. In 1990, he played a pivotal role in facilitating the merger between Friends World College and Long Island University. After supporting Friends World through its transition from an independent college to a unit of the University, Mr. Meyer joined the Council of Overseers for the newly formed Friends World Program. As a member of this body, he continues to support the growth and prosperity of this bastion of innovative, experiential education.

The spirit of social change that fuels the Friends World Program is also evident in Mr. Meyer’s commitment to community service. He has held a variety of positions including co-chairman of the Huntington chapter of Long Island Progressive Coalition, district director of the Huntington Beach Community Association and chairman of the Programmatic Diversity Committee of the Long Island Regional Council on Higher Education.

Mr. Meyer holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.Ed. from Putney Graduate School, and has pursued additional study at Yale University, New York University, SUNY Buffalo and SUNY Stony Brook. He and his wife, Mickey Kreutzer Meyer, have a combined family of seven children.
