Honoree-
Alan Chaves
 Alan
B. Chaves earned his B.A. in sociology from Bloomfield College in
1956 and his M.Div. from Bloomfield Seminary in 1959.
During his career in education, he has served as admissions counselor
for the City University of New York; as assistant director of admissions
and director of community relations for the City University of New
York Laguardia Community College; and as director of admissions
for the State University of New York College at Old Westbury.
He joined the staff of Long Island Universitys Brooklyn Campus
in 1981 as director of admissions, rising through the ranks to become
dean of admissions in 1984 and dean of admissions and athletics
in 1990. In 2000, he assumed the additional responsibility of overseeing
the Office of the Registrar.
Over the years, Dean Chaves has provided ongoing administrative
leadership for a campus that has continually grown and changed.
After twenty years, he remains enthusiastic about his job and the
mission of the Brooklyn Campus to educate students from every
walk of life. The unique blending of ethnic backgrounds that the
Brooklyn Campus offers creates a diverse and exciting environment
in which students and administrators can learn and grow. Being part
of that mission has made him proud of the role he has played in
its development.
Dean Chaves works closely with Provost Gale Stevens Haynes (page
24) to ensure that enrollment goals are continually met. Provost
Haynes admits, when thinking about enrollment, I sleep well
because I know that Alan doesnt. His hard work and determination
have resulted in a 100% increase in new student enrollment over
the past seven years.
In addition to his administrative duties, Dean Chaves is an associate
professor of social science and has taught classes on campus. He
sits on a number of academic and administrative committees and oversees
the Campus Division I athletic programs.
The Dean and his wife, Joan, reside in Lakewood, New Jersey. They
have three sons, one daughter, six grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
