Tuition Remission

Members of the University's full-time clerical and maintenance staff are entitled to up to 18 credits per year remission of tuition charges for a course or courses taken within the University.

Spouses are entitled to up to 18 credits of remission per year. Dependent children are entitled to remission of tuition for eight semesters of full time study or its equivalent of part-time study in any school or college of the University. The criteria determining dependency are those established by the Internal Revenue Service for income tax purposes. The term "children" is the legal definition: natural born, adopted or stepchildren by marriage.

The benefit is based on years of service as follows:

Employee Service Remission Percentage
1 month to 2 years 60%
2 years to 3 years 80%
3 years or more 100%

The benefits under this plan, which become effective with the beginning of the semester immediately following the date of an employee's appointment, apply to all schools and colleges in the University except doctoral programs. Benefits do not apply to non-credit courses unless such courses can reasonably be expected to contribute to the improvement of the individual's job performance. Tuition remission may not be applied to application fees, late registration or late payment fees, health insurance fees, or courses taught on an individual instruction basis.

Applicants are required to apply for any assistance available under federal, state and local laws. The amount of remission granted by the University will be net of the legally allowable awards.

An application for tuition remission can be obtained from the Campus Bursar or the University Payroll Department. A new application is required each academic year.
