Retirement Plan
Long Island University provides both a basic retirement
plan and a supplemental annuity plan through TIAA/CREF. Contributions
to both plans are made on a before-tax basis. The plans provide

plan to all full-time employees. Participation is not automatic.

Social Security Benefits
Social Security payments are required from most
University employees, including non-citizens. The tax rate
is determined each year by the federal government. For tax
year 2002, the rates are 6.2% social security tax on wages
up to $84,900.00 and 1.45% medicare tax on total wages.
Sick Leave Benefits
Full-time clerical and maintenance employees may
receive full or partial salary during periods of illness or
disability. The entitlement is one day sick leave for each
month of service, up to 10 days per year.
Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993
Under FMLA, the University is required to provide
up to 12 weeks unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees
for certain family and medical reasons. Reasons include:
- time needed to care for the employee's child after
birth, placement for adoption or foster care
- time needed to care for the employee's spouse,
son or daughter or parent who has a serious health condition
- and time needed due to a serious health condition that
makes the employee unable to perform his or her job
The University may coordinate and/or substitute paid leave
for all or part of the unpaid leave identified under FMLA.

Vacation and Holidays
Vacation and holidays for full-time clerical and
maintenance employees are outlined in their union contracts.
Holiday observance is designed by the Provost at each campus
and may include "floating" or optional days as well
as legal holidays. Normally, a total of twelve holidays are

Disability - Staff Member Group Disability
Plan
A. Eligibility - When a person is unable to work
at his or her occupation because of sickness or injury, a
plan has been set up to provide for income to the sick or
injured employee.
A new employee will be covered by this plan within the first
twenty days of his or her employment.
B. Description of Benefits - All of the provisions
of the Disability Benefits Law of the State of New York shall
apply with respect to the insurance provided by this plan.
After seven consecutive days of disability absence, an employee
is eligible to receive 66 2/3 % of his or her average weekly
wages up to the maximum stipulated by New York State Disability
Benefit Laws for 26 weeks for any one disability during a
52 week period.
C. Claims for Benefits - A claim for benefits must
describe the occurrence, character and extent of the event
and be signed by physician. It must be submitted to the Payroll
Department Long Island University, University Center, Brookville,
NY 11548 (phone 516-299-4216), within 20 days of the beginning
of the period of disability. Form DB-450 must be used for
your claim. Copies are available from the Payroll Office.
Unemployment Insurance
Effective January 1, 1971, the Unemployment Insurance
Law mandated unemployment insurance coverage in non-profit
educational institutions.
Information on New York State Unemployment Insurance for
claimants is available from local offices of the New York
State Department of Labor, Division of Employment. Application
for Unemployment Benefits should be made at a local Department
of Labor Office.
New York State Worker's Compensation
In general, worker's compensation benefits are
payments to employees for occupational disabilities, without
regard to any fault involved.
This coverage provides weekly benefits and medical care
to employees in the event of accidental injuries sustained
during the course of employment.
Claims for worker's compensation benefits should be submitted
to the Director of Business Operations.
Emergency Loans and Salary Advances
In cases of demonstrated need, the University will
grant an interest-free emergency loan repayable over a one-year
period. The maximum loan amount is $800.00 and only one loan
will be approved per academic year.
Full-time clerical and maintenance employees may also apply
for one salary advance in an academic year.
Loan applications and requests for salary advances require
the signature of your supervisor or Dean. Forms are available
from the Payroll Office.
