MUSIC TECHNOLOGY LAB

Music Technology is nothing new at C.W. Post with instruction in synthesizers and computer music software being offered since the late '80s. However, in Fall 1999, the Music Technology program at Post took a giant step Students at work in MUS 17F, Spring 2002forward with the opening of the Department of Music's Music Technology Lab.

The Music Technology Lab at C.W. Post includes fourteen Pentium-based stations with Internet access, each equipped with a studio-quality KORG Triton music workstation.  Software installed on each station includes Cakewalk, Finale, FreeStyle and Band-in-a-Box.  The lab also contains professional mixing and monitoring equipment, CD burning software and hardware, a group education controller for class and individual instruction and an LCD projector and large screen.

With this state-of-the-art lab, the C.W. Post Department of Music offers students instruction in electronic keyboards, MIDI sequencing, notation software, digital audio, and technology in Music Education on both undergraduate and graduate levels. The lab is also used in music theory classes, for ear-training practice and for developing keyboard skills. Overall, students can use the lab to learn concepts and skills that will help them in almost any musical discipline from composition and arranging to performance, listening and teaching.

This year, with its "smart-classroom" lab as the focal point of its technology program, the Department of Music will move towards greater integration of computers in the classroom and will expand its use of technology to include the World Wide Web. Plans call for Web pages where students will find interactive online study and reference material, which they will be able to use to listen and learn, and even create, from the lab on campus or from home. These pages will include theory and ear-training tutorials, class notes and listening examples. The Department Web site is located at www.liu.edu/svpa/music.

With its expanded use of technology, and especially its Music Technology Lab, the Department of Music at C.W. Post is poised to give its students the technological skills and experiences needed to be successful and innovative in today's musical world. For more information about the Technology Program at C.W. Post or for a tour of the new lab facilities in the Fine Arts Center, contact John Meschi at 516-299-2105 or jmeschi@liu.edu.
