Riverhead, N.Y. - Paul N. Stockton, a member of the Board of Advisors of the Homeland Security Management Institute at Long Island University, has been appointed by President Obama to the position of assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and America's security affairs.
Prior to his appointment, Stockton was a senior research scholar at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation. He was formerly the associate provost at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and was the founding director of its Center for Homeland Defense and Security. The Senate confirmed his nomination May 19.
"We are absolutely thrilled that Dr. Stockton has taken this critical position leading the nation's homeland defense activities, and we are absolutely confident in his capabilities," said Vincent Henry, director of Long Island University's Homeland Security Management Institute. "His contributions to the academic discipline of homeland security are tremendous, and as the academic partner of CHDS the Homeland Security Management Institute has benefited immensely from Dr. Stockton's generosity in sharing curriculum and resources as well the guidance, advice, and counsel he has given us through the years."
"While we are disappointed that Dr. Stockton's new appointment as assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and America's security affairs requires that he step down from our Board of Advisors, we are also greatly reassured that the safety and security of our nation is in the best of hands," Henry said.
The Homeland Security Management Institute offers the Master of Science in homeland security management, the first degree of its kind registered in New York State. The institute also offers a graduate level, 15-credit advanced certificate in homeland security management. Both programs are fully online.
The faculty of senior fellows and Board of Advisers of the institute include some of the nation's most prominent law enforcement, public safety and private security officials and elected leaders, such as Los Angeles Police Chief and former New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton, U.S. Reps. Peter T. King and Steve Israel, White Plains Public Safety Commissioner Frank Straub and Stan Supinski, former deputy for training and education for the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command.
