Riverhead, N.Y.- With enrollment up by 20 percent over last year and a five-year accreditation by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council in place, Long Island University at Riverhead will graduate 66 students with master's degrees and graduate-level certificates on Sunday, May 10, 2009.
Thirty-four students will graduate with the Master of Science in education, nine will earn the M.S. in homeland security management and 23 will earn the advanced certificate in homeland security management.
There are 250 students enrolled at Long Island University at Riverhead, an increase of 50 from spring 2008, said Associate Provost Jennifer Browne. Enrollment in education master's degree programs is up by 19 percent, and enrollment at the Homeland Security Management Institute, which is based at Riverhead, is up 29 percent. The increase is all the more significant because Riverhead graduated 54 students - its first graduating class - in May 2008.
This year, Long Island University at Riverhead earned full accreditation by TEAC through January 2014. When TEAC representatives visited in September, "they were very impressed with our students and faculty and with our written application, and they gave us a very favorable review," Browne said. "It's an important national accreditation. It shows that we meet all the benchmarks of a high-quality teacher education program."
Commencement 2009 will be celebrated with two special receptions. Graduate education students will be honored at a reception at Long Island University at Riverhead on Friday, May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Long Island University Building on the eastern campus of Suffolk County Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road. Homeland security management students will have their recognition event on Saturday, May 16. Graduates and professors are invited to participate in the Commencement exercises at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y. on Sunday, May 10.
Associate Provost Browne added that she, along with the faculty and staff at Riverhead, are most proud of "our graduates and the excellent, cutting-edge work they bring to education in the New York area and homeland security across the country."
Long Island University at Riverhead offers master's degrees in childhood education (grades 1-6), teaching children with disabilities (grades 1-6 and grades 7-12) and literacy education (grades 1 - 6), with certification in all three areas.
The Homeland Security Management Institute, designated by Congress as a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, features a professionally experienced core faculty and growing body of students from the FBI, DHS, Defense Intelligence Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency, the New York City Police Department, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and more.
