Morgan Lyle,Assistant Director of Public Relations
LIU formally opened its newest location, in Riverhead, with a ribbon-cutting celebration today, Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006. More than 125 college officials, government leaders, students, faculty and community members attended the event. At the ceremony, proclamations in recognition of the new site -- which is located on the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College -- were presented to Long Island University by the Town of Riverhead and the Town of Brookhaven.
"LIU Riverhead brings challenging, highly respected graduate-level courses to central Suffolk County and the North and South Forks," said Jennifer Browne, associate provost of the new site. "We welcome our neighbors in eastern Suffolk County to discover quality private education in a convenient location."
Students pursue courses leading to master's degrees in childhood education, teaching students with disabilities and literacy education. Classes are offered during the evening and weekends.
Additionally, LIU's ground-breaking, fully online Master of Science and Advanced Certificate programs in Homeland Security Management operate from Long Island University at Riverhead. They are the first of their kind approved and registered with the New York State Education Department, and are among the first in the nation. "Law enforcement, public safety and private security professionals, as well as public officials and people with undergraduate degrees who are interested in a homeland security career, will find no better program in this vital and growing field," said Browne.
LIU's Riverhead site is located on the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). LIU classes began in September 2006 in a 10,000-square-foot building, which features eight wireless classrooms as well as offices for faculty and administrative staff. More than 200 students can be accommodated at the site. LIU and SCCC are in discussions to develop four-year undergraduate degree programs together, with SCCC offering the first two years and LIU the second two years.
The Riverhead site is located at 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road in the Long Island University Building. Visit www.liu.edu/riverhead or call (631) 287-8010 for more information.
