LIU Post Means Business

Brookville, N.Y. -The secret to success in today’s challenging business world is right in your backyard. Located on the north shore of Long Island in Brookville, LIU Post is home to one of the top ranked business schools in the nation. The College of Management – recognized as a Best Business School by the Princeton Review and among only five percent of schools world-wide accredited by AACSB International – has graduated more than 30,000 alumni who are breaking boundaries in every field.

John CollinsFor example, John Collins, who earned a marketing degree from the College of Management in 1983, has become one of the world’s most accomplished sports executives. As chief operating officer of the National Hockey League, he is responsible for the NHL's global business, sales, licensing and media operations and was named executive of the year by the American Business Awards.

Such success is not limited to the sporting arena. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely stroll at Coney Island or shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall, you’re likely to come across an iconic American eatery with an LIU Post connection. Howard Lorber, who earned degrees from LIU Post in sociology and accounting, is the executive chairman of Nathan’s Famous – which has outposts in major cities, malls, sports arenas and theme parks across America.

When you are using the ATM machine or paying bills online, you may have LIU Post’s own Bill Nuti to thank for that. A 1986 graduate of the College of Management’s business administration program, he is chairman, president and CEO of NCR Corporation, one of the world’s largest electronic transaction companies.

Beth ShawAnd Yoga devotees may recognize the name Beth Shaw. Shaw, who graduated from the College of Management in 1988, is the entrepreneurial innovator behind numerous fitness trends including YogaFit Sweat and YogaLean. Her classes are available on six continents with over 1,000 trainings each year.

“My time at LIU gave me the lessons and confidence that have helped me succeed as an entrepreneur,” said Shaw, founder and president of YogaFit Inc. 

The College of Management’s extraordinary graduates are quick to credit their success to the education they received at LIU Post.

Thomas Buonaiuto“I’ve been an auditor at a Big 4 firm, CFO of Union State Bank, and now, president & COO of Empire National Bank,” said Thomas Buonaiuto, a certified public accountant who graduated from LIU Post in 1987. “But I got my start at the College of Management at LIU Post, where the professors helped me hone my skills in accountancy, finance and taxation.”

Better by Degrees

The College of Management offers a full array of bachelor’s and master’s degrees that promote new ways of thinking for a changing economy. The College offers a constellation of programs and services for careers in business, public administration, health care administration, accountancy and taxation, and is continually developing new programs to meet students’ changing needs.

The most recent additions are new accelerated degree programs that lead to both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in as little as five years – a considerable savings of time and cost over traditional separate programs, which typically take at least six years to compete.

The accelerated degree programs pair undergraduate and graduate degrees in combinations that provide students with a unique set of tools for today’s job market. Developed in conjunction with other schools of study at LIU Post, the degrees achieve versatility through their interdisciplinary nature.

The B.A. in Economics/Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) addresses a growing trend among employers nationwide – a desire for M.B.A. graduates who have a foundation in the principles of economics.

Designed for today’s interdependent world where economic forces operate in an increasingly complex business environment, the 159-credit program combines an undergraduate education in economics with comprehensive M.B.A. preparation in management, marketing, finance and world business. Upon graduation, students will be uniquely equipped for careers in investment banking, international trade and supply chain management, to name just a few.

The B.F.A. in Arts Management/M.B.A. provides the aspiring entertainment professional with the business skills needed to thrive in a highly competitive environment. A bachelor’s degree in arts management offers a concentration in visual arts, music, theatre or dance, with history and theory classes as well as applied work. Required internships offer real-world experience at the likes of DreamWorks Theatrical Productions, Stomp, SONY Music, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Nassau Coliseum, Island Def Jam Recordings, Heckscher Museum, and other venues in the New York City metropolitan area, as well as on-campus institutions such as Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and Steinberg Museum of Art. The combination of this degree with the M.B.A. is a powerful credential that will connect artists and audiences.

The B.F.A. in Arts Management/Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) takes the same approach but is tailored to the non-profit sector, such as museums, community arts centers and educational institutions.

“Graduates of these innovative programs will have all the competencies needed for success in business or public administration – and specialized knowledge that will be an advantage as they begin their careers,” Dean Rosman said.

Mentoring from the A-List

The College of Management’s new Advisory Board will help the next generation of alumni to achieve success. The 35-member board includes representatives of a wide range of fields, from accounting to fashion. Members include surgeon Dean Pappas, M.D.; Robert Rosenthal, the chief information officer for The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; and renowned architect Mark Simon, celebrated for his “green” building designs and a founding partner of Centerbrook Architects of Essex, Connecticut.

A graduate of Yale School of Architecture, Simon said that he looks forward to bringing an outside business perspective and networking opportunities for students of the College. “The College of Management is a premier destination for students seeking a globalized education,” he said. “I am honored to work with the university to ensure that the school continues to be an important resource for the business community and to attract students from around the world.”

This week, members of the Advisory Board are sharing their insights on being in business as part of Entrepreneurship Week at LIU Post. In a series of free on-campus talks, Alan Vituli, CPA, the former CEO and chairman of Carrols Restaurant Group; Sanford Kane, CEO of Real Sourcing Network and president of Kane Concepts Inc., and Garth Monroe, vice president and chief financial officer for BioNano Genomics, gave students a glimpse of the world of the entrepreneur and the risks and rewards of being in business for one’s self.

Faculty: Credentialed & Caring

The professors of the College of Management hold the highest degrees in their fields and possess extensive expertise. Many have won important awards – such as Dr. Maura Belliveau, who was named an Outstanding Business School Faculty member by Business Week magazine.

One of the greatest testaments of the College’s successful mission can be found in a recent donation to the university from a renowned business scholar. Dr. Shailendra Palvia, a professor of management information systems and an expert in global IT management and outsourcing, has endowed a $25,000 scholarship for undergraduates studying management information systems and full-time M.B.A. students from India.

“I feel richer in my heart because I’m contributing to the university,” Dr. Palvia said.

The College of Management will hold an open house on Saturday, September 28 for high school juniors and transfer students in Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.
