M.S. in Ed in Special Education: Adolescence Generalist (Gr. 7 – 12 ) and Content Areas of Math, Science, Social Studies or English (Gr. 5 – 12)
The 47-credit M.S.Ed. degree in special education and a content area is for students without prior certification. It leads to a Master of Science degree and eligibility for initial NYS Certification in Students with Disabilities (Gr. 7 – 12) as well as the individual content area (Gr. 5 – 12). It prepares students to teach in self-contained special education classrooms and resource rooms at the middle school and high school level (Gr. 7 – 12) as well as in general education classes in their content area.
Students graduating from this program are eligible for teaching certification once they have passed all required portions of the New York State Teacher Certification Exam (NYSTCE). Students may also apply for Internship Certification in their content area or in special education after completing the first 24 credits. Internship Certification permits students to begin teaching while they complete their degrees.
