Educational Leadership

Woman by Bookshelf

The Department of Educational Leadership prepares talented educators from public, charter, religious-affiliated and independent schools for administrative roles at the community, school, district, state and national levels. The programs prepare educators for positions of leadership (e.g., superintendents, principals, department chairs, supervisors, etc.) in urban, suburban and rural schools with diverse populations. The role of educational leader becomes more challenging every day. This dictates that students grasp theoretical concepts and hone practical skills in order to be reflective practitioners who are able to promote social justice, create caring classrooms and school communities, and enable all children to be successful learners.

The pedagogical content of the courses combines theory with practice. An integral part of these programs is an internship experience which is fulfilled in collaboration with school/district leaders. During this intense internship, focus is placed upon five areas: Administration/Organization/Business Management, School- Community Relations, Staff/Personnel Issues, Student Personnel Issues, and Curriculum & Instruction.

All courses stress critical thinking, reflection, and problem solving skills to prepare individuals so that they may be leaders in school change and improve student performance. Coursework prepares students to draw connections between theory and practice and focus upon optimizing learning. The Educational Leadership graduate programs are committed to preparing candidates who demonstrate the essential characteristics of effective leaders, promoted by the New York State Education Department. Emphasis is placed upon the core domains of leadership and the recently adopted Performance Standards for Educational Leaders (PSELS).

The educational leadership programs lead to eligibility for New York State certificates as School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) as well as out-of-state Principal and Superintendent certifications.

Each year graduating Educational Leadership students are asked to complete a survey relating to their experiences at LIU Hudson. Completers, using a 5 point Likert Scale (5=Excellent; 4=Very Good; 3=Good; 2=Fair; 1=Poor), respond to a set of questions specific to their preparation as future school building or district leaders.  For the 2016-2017 academic year, eight of the nine elements probed (finance/budget management; knowledge of school law; planning staff development; supervision of staff; developing and maintaining community relations; leading curriculum development; crisis management skills; using data to drive instruction) received good or better ratings from 81% of the respondents. Most telling, 100% of program completers responded good or better to the final, and most critical, item “Applying learning to real world situations during internship”. This element clearly demonstrates the strength of the preparation LIU Hudson provides for educational leadership interns, as well as the care with which internships are supervised.

According to the most recent data available, the 4-year graduation rate is 92.5% for students who entered Educational Leadership programs in AY 2012/13 -2013/14.

Educational Leadership (EDL) students seeking certification as School Building Leaders (SBL) or School District Leaders (SDL) took the two part New York State Education Department required SBL or SDL examinations. Of the 25 program completers, seven were not working in public education in New York State and neither applied for NYS certification nor sat for New York State Examinations. Of the remaining 18 certification candidates the pass rate for the SBL exams was 100% and 91% for the SDL exams. The total pass rate was 94.44%.
