Orangeburg, N.Y. -- LIU Hudson at Rockland invites you to attend an informative and timely talk on the epidemic problem of sexual abuse of children by authority figures. This free event will take place on Tuesday, April 17, from 7 to 8 p.m., at LIU Hudson at Rockland, located at 70 Route 340 in Orangeburg, N.Y. (230 Route 340 Sparkill, N.Y. for GPS).

The statistics on the subject of child abuse are frightening. According to wingsfoundation.org and the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the age of 18, and in 93% of juvenile sexual assaults, the victims know their attacker. In the United States today, there are 60 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Presenting this topic will be two experts in the field, Mary B. Murphy and Karen A. Riley.

Mary Murphy is assigned to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit, where she investigates and assists in the prosecution of crimes against the most vulnerable in our society. She is an instructor for the International Association of Chiefs of Police on the topic of juvenile interview and interrogation. Currently, she directs the Spirit of Rockland Special Victims Center located at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y.

Karen Riley is a former judge of the Rockland County Court. She has been an assistant district attorney and a supervisor in special victims prosecution. Ms. Riley is also a certified trainer in the Forensic Interviewing Best Practices program of the New York State Child Advocacy Resource Center.
